Being a part of something and why showing up is important
Farming can be a lonely job. Many days are spent working on your own, focused on the land, the animals, and the long list of things that need to get done. That’s why taking the time to attend local Annual General Meetings and farm shows really matters.
The Bible reminds us, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20). When farmers come together—whether it’s in a meeting hall or walking the lanes of a farm show—we’re reminded that we’re not meant to do this work alone. There is strength in being together, and there is encouragement in knowing others understand the challenges and rewards of farm life.
AGMs give farmers a chance to be heard. They’re where decisions are made, leaders are chosen, and the future direction is shaped. Showing up is a way of taking responsibility—not just for an organization, but for one another and for the next generation of farmers. It’s a simple but meaningful act of stewardship.
Farm shows offer something different, but just as valuable. They’re a place to learn, to see what’s new, and to have conversations that spark ideas or simply remind you why you chose this life. A handshake, a shared story, or a quick conversation over coffee can go a long way.
Both AGMs and farm shows build community. They bring farmers out from behind the wheel of the tractor or the barn door and back into fellowship with one another. In those moments of connection, support is found, wisdom is shared, and faith is quietly lived out.
Showing up matters. It matters for your voice, your neighbours, and the future of agriculture. And when we gather with purpose and goodwill, we can trust that God is present among us—strengthening our work, our relationships, and our communities.
