Ray and Sharon Halma farm near Troy, where his family moved from New York State in the early 1980’s. They also have thicker walls and mimic the dimensions preferred by wild honey bees, which tend to seek out holes in trees with a capacity of around 70L and openings of about four inches in diameter. He leaves the hives’ two bottom boxes alone and will extract honey only from a third box on top. His hives are also spread out across his property, along a winding, five-kilometre trail that Victor affectionately calls his “bee highway.” The bees can take advantage of the natural areas bordering the farm, which gives them plenty of space to roam. “This year, the concept of social distancing really hit home,” Victor comments. “Animals practice that in their own environment naturally.” Victor, like most beekeepers, is fascinated by the way bees work as one body. “They operate in a collective, it’s a living organism. One colony is like one animal. They also employ a handful of teens from the area to help to bottle-feed the baby goats in the winter. “They’re all girls—you need patience to feed baby goats,” Jony laughs. During kidding season, as many as 300 goats are born each day. It sounds like chaos, but Jan and Jony have adapted techniques and systems to keep things running smoothly—including developing their own app. With help from a tech-savvy friend, Jony designed a system for tracking goat-kid health in their first busy months. Employees are equipped with tablets so they can import information for each kid under their care, such as feedings and medication. The information enables Jan and Jony to track the health of their herd. “We used to keep all the information on chalkboards, but the goats kept licking it off,” Jony chuckles. The app has gone a long way toward cutting down frustration and ensuring that all employees have the information they need to keep the kids healthy. During kidding season, the newborn billies are separated from the females and sold to another farmer to raise for meat. They grow most of their own feed. While the good cropping fields are tiled and kept in a soybean-corn crop rotation, several acres are kept as pasture for the heifers and dry cows. After four or five years as alfalfa fields for hay production, they rotate to no-till corn followed by barley. But as a single woman with no financial support from family, she faced an uphill battle. Her first step was to become an accountant, which enabled her to earn money toward buying a farm. In 1993, she made her first payment, armed with a full-time job and a flock of 19 purebred Dorset ewes. For nearly a decade, everything Jensen made went into the farm.
